Card Meaning
♥  Hearts — Love, Emotion, Home & Family
Ace The most favorable heart card. New love, happiness, the home itself, good news arriving, troubles lifting. A love letter or heartfelt message.
King A fair or light-haired, warm-hearted man. Kind, generous, affectionate. Often represents a husband, father, or trusted male friend.
Queen A fair or light-haired woman. Loving, empathic, intuitive. Can represent the female querent, a mother, or a woman of goodwill.
Jack A young person (often blond or light), inexperienced in love. Can be a bearer of good news, or a charming but not-yet-serious admirer.
10 Good fortune in love. Joy, happiness, a loving home life. One of the best cards in the deck — success and contentment.
9 The Wish Card. The querent's heart's desire will be fulfilled. An extremely favorable card — wishes come true.
8 Relatives, loved ones gathering. A circle of caring people around you. Social warmth, but can also indicate someone being indecisive about love.
7 Emotional struggle or challenge. Someone's affections for you may be fickle or unreliable. Lovesickness, inner turmoil of the heart.
♦  Diamonds — Money, Messages, Material World & Change
Ace An important message, often about money or a new opportunity. News of change, usually good. Can indicate a financial windfall, a letter, or a significant announcement.
King A fair-haired or graying man of authority, status, or influence. Successful in business. Can be stubborn or focused on material matters.
Queen A fair-haired woman, often associated with social status. Can indicate a gossip or someone who meddles in others' affairs.
Jack A young person, possibly a messenger bearing news — often somewhat negative or unreliable. May represent jealousy.
10 A change in financial status, usually for the better. A journey or travel is often associated with this card. Positive movement.
9 New business dealings, a fresh start in finances, or a journey. Restlessness, a desire for change, or an actual change of residence.
8 A new job or a change in work situation. For those younger or older, can indicate love found while traveling.
7 An argument or disagreement about money or work. Generally expected to resolve itself favorably in the end. Financial friction that passes.
♣  Clubs — Work, Ambition, Practical Matters & Effort
Ace Wealth, prosperity, unexpected financial gain or lucky break. New business, success, important documents. One of the most fortunate cards in the deck — though in a negative spread, the money may not last.
King A dark-haired, generous, spirited man. Loyal, hardworking, perhaps hot-tempered but well-meaning. A good friend or business partner.
Queen A dark-haired, confident woman. Attractive, practical, sometimes flirtatious. Generally a positive presence.
Jack A reliable, dark-haired young person. A trustworthy friend, someone who may bring helpful information or act on your behalf.
10 Good luck and success in business or career. Travel for work purposes. Financial improvement through diligence.
9 Achievement of goals, success in business. A stubborn but determined energy. Disputes resolved in your favor.
8 Hard work leading to reward. Ambition, practical efforts paying off. Movement toward a goal that requires persistence.
7 Business success despite some obstacles. A promotion or positive change at work that was earned. There may be minor troubles in love while career flourishes.
♠  Spades — Challenges, Endings, Conflict & Transformation
Ace The most powerful spade. Major transformation or ending. Can signify a difficult conclusion or serious misfortune — more often the death of a situation, relationship, or phase of life. Demands attention.
King A dark-haired ambitious man, possibly self-serving. Can represent a lawyer, authority figure, or someone who creates obstacles. Not always friendly to the querent.
Queen A widowed or divorced woman, or one who has experienced significant loss or hardship. Can represent a woman who is sharp-tongued or has suffered.
Jack A hostile or jealous young person. Someone who may be working against you, even secretly. A warning figure.
10 Misfortune, worry, bad news. One of the more negative cards. Can indicate grief, imprisonment (literal or figurative), or serious setback. When beside a face card, can mean alcoholic, addict or a negative/angry person.
9 The worst card in the deck by many traditions. Bad luck, illness, loss, deep disappointment. Some associate it with accidents or profound sorrow. Always a warning.
8 Temptation leading to trouble. Danger, upsets, false friends. Plans going wrong. Proceed with caution in whatever area the spread concerns.
7 Advice not to be heeded, or bad advice being given. Loss, an obstacle — possibly one coming from within the querent themselves. A warning to examine your own role in a situation.
General Notes

Red cards (Hearts & Diamonds) are traditionally read as positive, favorable, or "yes" energies. Black cards (Clubs & Spades) lean negative, cautionary, or "no" — though Clubs are considerably more positive than Spades. Context and surrounding cards always modify individual meanings.

Sevens across all suits tend to signal the first hurdle or challenge in a matter. Aces are powerful initiators — they open new chapters, for better or worse depending on suit. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) often represent actual people in the querent's life.

The 9 of Hearts (the Wish Card) and the 9 of Spades (the Sorrow Card) are traditionally considered the two most significant cards in the 32-card deck, and their presence tends to color the whole reading.

Clarifying Cards

If a card's message feels unclear, ambiguous, or surprisingly strong, you may draw one additional card and place it beside the original, asking: "What does this card mean in this context?" The two are then read together as a unit. The clarifier does not replace the original card's meaning — it shades, narrows, or amplifies it.

Limit clarification to once per card. Pulling a clarifier for a clarifier creates an endless chain and tends to muddy rather than illuminate the reading. If the pair still feels unclear, that ambiguity is itself part of the message — some things are not meant to be sharply defined at the time of reading. Most readers also limit themselves to clarifying one or two cards per spread, reserving it for cards that feel genuinely pivotal or contradictory in context.

Suit-on-suit pairings are especially meaningful when clarifying. A ♠ clarified by a ♥ often signals emotional pain that is healing, or a difficult situation softened by love or support. A ♥ clarified by a ♠ can suggest happiness that comes at a cost, or a relationship with an undertow. Two Spades together confirm and deepen a warning — take it seriously. Two Hearts together amplify joy or emotional intensity. A Diamonds card clarifying almost anything pulls the meaning toward the practical — money, communication, or a physical change becomes the operative factor.

Some traditions hold that Aces, the 9♥, and the 9♠ should not be clarified — these cards speak with enough authority on their own that drawing further risks diluting a clear message. That said, consistency in your own approach matters more than any fixed rule.
